Two school students were injured in an accident in Thane on Friday morning. The Rabodi police have registered an offence in connection with the incident.

The Rabodi police said the incident occured around 10 a.m., when Ved Kate and Kanak Joshi, both 11 years old, were walking to their school bus after school. The boys are Class VII students of Saraswati Vidyalaya in Thane.

“A tempo going towards Saket at high speed hit a WagonR in front of it. The WagonR, as a result, lost control and careened towards the two boys, knocking them down,” senior police inspector Ramrao Somvanshi, Rabodi police station said.

The boys sustained multiple injuries due to the collision, and within minutes, eye witnesses gathered around the two vehicles, Mr. Somvanshi said. The tempo driver, despite attempts by local residents to restrain him, managed to flee. Meanwhile, the boys were rushed to nearby private hospitals, where they are currently under treatment.

“The boys have not sustained any serious injuries and they are out of danger. Using the registration documents found in the tempo, we have detained the owner. However, he has claimed that his younger brother was driving at the time of the accident,” Mr. Somvanshi said.

The younger brother was traced and brought to the police station. However, he is a minor and can’t be arrested nor detained after sundown. Hence, he has been issued a notice and asked to come back on Monday, he said.

The police have registered an FIR of causing injury and endangering life due to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code along with sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. They are conducting further inquiries.
