A wall collapse at a construction site in Tardeo claimed two lives and left one person injured on Saturday.
According to officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the construction site of Shree Siddhi Avenue Tower near the Regional Transport Office in Tardeo.
The employees at the site, who were caught under the debris, were rushed to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central. Faiz Khan (24) was declared dead before admission, while Tapan Das (28) died while undergoing treatment around 3 p.m., officials said. The third employee, identified as Jaydeo Roy, was treated for his injuries and later discharged.
The Tardeo police were informed about the incident and a team was sent to the construction site to carry out inquiries. The police said Khan was a junior engineer at the site while Das and Mr. Roy were labourers.
“We have registered an accidental death report in the matter and are conducting further inquiries. We are also waiting for the BMC to send us a report of its inquiries,” senior police inspector Sanjay Surve, Tardeo police station, said.
SRA project
The police have learnt that the wall that collapsed had been built on a temporary basis, and the construction site is a project sanctioned by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). Inquires regarding the details of the project are under way with the SRA officials concerned.
Mr. Surve said the construction was being carried out by a private builder, and the police are checking with the BMC if the developer had obtained all the requisite permissions. The police are also making inquiries with the site supervisor and other employees to find out if necessary safety precautions had been taken for workers.
