Two college students from Ulhasnagar died and four others were injured after the car that they were travelling in met with an accident on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Kulgaon police, Nutan Tayade, Rutika Kadam, Nikhil Sanas, Namita Patil, Kamlesh Rajput and Pratik Sabale, all 18 years old, were returning home after celebrating the birthday of Ms. Patil near Barvi Dam near Badlapur.

“The accident occurred between Kulgaon and Barvi Dam in Badlapur. The students had left for the area on Wednesday morning and wrapped up early so that they could return home in time. They were travelling in a Maruti Ertiga, which was being driven by Mr. Sanas. The car lost control at a corner while negotiating a turn and turned upside down,” assistant police inspector Avinash Patil, Kulgaon police station, said.

Passing motorists took all the six to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. While Tayade and Kadam were declared dead before admission, Mr. Sanas was moved to the intensive care unit of AIMS Hospital in Dombivali. Ms. Patil and Mr. Sabale were shifted to J.J. Hospital in Byculla, and Mr. Rajput was discharged after being administered first aid at Central Hospital.

Doctors at AIMS Hospital said Mr. Sanas has chest fractures. “There is no neurological damage. He has external bruises and chest and rib fractures. He is alert and responding, and we have kept him in the ICU,” a doctor said.

Meanwhile, an autopsy was conducted on Tayade and Kadam, and reports are awaited.

The police have for the moment registered a fatal accident report and have sent the car to be inspected by Regional Transport Office (RTO) officers. Mr. Patil said depending on the RTO’s report, Mr. Sanas might be booked for causing death and endangering life due to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
