Mumbai: A container truck carrying heavy electric cables turned on its side on a flyover on the Ghodbunder Road in Thane on Monday morning, causing the heavy spools of electrical cable to fall off the flyover. While no casualties were reported in the incident, the obstruction on the busy road and the number of heavy vehicles transporting goods early in the morning caused traffic congestion for several hours.
According to the Kapurbawdi police, the container truck was travelling towards Thane. The driver lost control while trying to overtake a vehicle on the Majiwada flyover around 6:30 a.m. on Monday.
The truck careened to its right, turned on its side, and came to a grinding halt by the edge of the flyover. Two of the three spools of heavy cable that it was carrying fell onto the road below.
“The cable spools did not cause any damage to any vehicles when they fell. But the truck blocked one lane of the flyover, and as many heavy vehicles ferry various supplies into the city at that time of the morning, the obstruction caused the heavy traffic to come to a halt,” said an officer with the Kapurbawdi police.
The police immediately placed barricades around the spools of cable and rushed teams to the spot where the truck had overturned. The truck was turned upright using a crane and towed away.
“In the meantime, our personnel diverted vehicles coming towards the flyover to the road below,” said an officer with the Thane traffic police.
The truck driver, meanwhile, fled the scene before the police got there, and the police are trying to trace and apprehend him.
