The night of December 28, 2017 ended in tragedy for 14 people, including someone who's birthday it was, as a massive fire broke out at the '1 Above Pub' in the Kamala Mills ompound in Mumbai.

The Kamala Mills Compound in central Mumbai is a redeveloped industrial compound, housing upmarket restaurants and commercial establishments, including offices of several television news channels such as Times Now, ET Now and TV9 Marathi.

The fire broke out after 12.30 a.m. on the third floor of the four-storey Trade House Building in the Compound.

Eye witnesses said the fire began in the roof over the open air area of the pub and spread rapidly to the Mojo’s Bistro next to it, sparking panic among the patrons. Strong winds fanned the blaze which soon engulfed the building.

Most of the 14 victims — 11 women and three men — died due to asphyxiation. Among the dead was Khushbu Bansali, who was celebrating her 29th birthday, according to the official list of victims. Fifty-four were injured.

Fallout and arrests

The Mumbai Municipal Corporation launched a major demolition drive that weekend, demolishing 314 illegal extentions and sealing seven restaurnts. The next day, 30 more eateries were sealed, with more rooftop pubs served notices by the Fire Services Department.

Two managers of 1 Above and kin of the ownerrs were arrested, along with both owners of Mojo's Bistro.
