Mumbai: A 19-year-old Malad resident gave a new lease of life to four critically ill patients after his kin decided to donate his organs. The teenager, Raj Gandhi, a second-year commerce student at M.K. College in Borivali, was injured in a railway accident on May 18 and was declared brain dead on Sunday.

According to his family, he fell of the train while returning from a visit to his uncle’s factory in Masjid Bunder. He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra.

His heart was transplanted onto a 60-year old man suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. This was the 48th heart transplant carried out at Fortis Hospital in Mulund. The family also donated his kidneys, liver and corneas.

Gandhi’’s brother Miten said the family took the decision to help save others’ lives. “My brother will continue to live within them. It wasn’t an easy decision,” he said, adding his parents have been honoured by our community for the gesture. “The medical team helped us tremendously in taking the decision,” he added.
