Officials working inside makeshift learner’s licence testing centre on Monday after a fire on Sunday destroyed the department at the Regional Transport Office in Tardeo.

Sunday’s fire did not seem to have put the brakes on the staff at the Tardeo Regional Transport Office where tests for learning licence were conducted on Monday, although the process was a bit slow. According to officials, they managed to process all the appointments scheduled for the day despite the damage to several files and appliances in the fire which gutted the learner’s licence section.

Subash Pedamkar, Regional Transport Officer, Tardeo, said all learner’s test on Monday were conducted from a makeshift facility within the premises.

Mr. Pedamkar said, 30 computers had been destroyed in the fire and there were only 15 computers in use at the makeshift facility, due to which the waiting time increased.

According to an RTO official, there were 280 appointments for Monday of whom 232 showed up for their tests. “We are organising more computers and the situation should improve in the coming days,” an RTO official said.

Mr. Pedamkar said the fire had also damaged 22,000 blank cards and 4,000 printed cards. “We have issued the order to reprint the 4,000 cards. The process will take a few days,” he said.

The Tardeo RTO is the oldest of the city and the state. The office comprises 13 single-storied wooden barracks, which date back to the British era.
