The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission (MSWC) on Monday demanded the suspension of IPS officer Sunil Paraskar, who has been accused of rape by a Mumbai-based model.

MSWC Chairperson Susieben Shah, in a letter to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, said that the officer should be suspended pending the investigation of rape case against him.

"To ensure a free and fair investigation, either Mr. Paraskar should step aside voluntarily while the investigation is ongoing and if not, he should be suspended pending completion of the investigation," the letter stated.

The Commission also raised apprehension about Mr. Paraskar's reasons for denying to undergo a lie detector test. Mr. Paraskar had told a Mumbai court recently that he will not be unable to appear for a lie detector test as his medical condition does not allow him to do so. He had claimed he has undergone a bypass surgery, making it difficult for him to give the test.

Ms. Shah said a leading cardiologist has opined that "Mr. Paraskar does not face any health hazard for taking a lie detector test."

"I therefore request you to take an opinion from a leading cardiologist attached to government hospital to ascertain the authenticity of the claim," Ms. Shah wrote.

She also demanded that the police submit the status report about the probe in the case, till this weekend.
