Stole ₹55 lakh in cash after owner failed to pay his salary

The police have arrested the manager of a ball pen store in South Mumbai who stole ₹55 lakh from the cash register after the store’s owner failed to pay his salary.

LT Marg police said they registered an FIR against unknown persons after the accused, identified as Javed Sayyed, filed a complaint of theft on July 23. Mr. Sayyed alleged that someone broke into the store on Abdul Rehman Street and made away with ₹55 lakh in cash.

An officer said, “A couple of eye-witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a grey raincoat enter the building, where the store is located, on the night of July 21.” The police found that the Digital Video Recorder, which captured the CCTV footage of the store, was missing. This raised the police’s suspicion as the location of the DVR is known only to someone with inside knowledge of the store. The officer said, “We suspected Mr. Sayyed’s hand in the burglary, but his employer trusted him completely. However, while making additional inquiries, we found that Mr. Sayyed was evading questions on his movements on the night the store was burgled.”

The police had a hunch that Mr. Sayyed was involved in the crime. On searching his bike, they found a grey raincoat in its boot. Mr. Sayyed was then detained and questioned intensively.

Mr. Sayyed was arrested after he confessed to having stolen the money. The police said that he committed the crime as he was angry with his employer for not paying his salary for a couple of months. The police then recovered the stolen amount, which was hidden behind the toilet tank in his house.
