Skymet Weather Services, a private weather and agriculture risk monitoring company, has launched an updated version of its mobile application allowing users to know region-wise weather updates across 16 major areas in Mumbai, including Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon, Mulund, Bandra, Jogeshwari, and Andheri.
Jatin Singh, founder and managing director of Skymet Weather, said, “We believe that even with existing technologies, there was meaningless loss of life and property on July 26, 2005 when Mumbai received 900 mm rainfall in just a couple of hours. Skymet has been working to solve this problem for over a decade. The idea is on giving a 10-day window to Mumbaikars about heavy rain and flooding in the city.” Mr. Singh said weather forecasting is a new science and does not come easy. “That is why it is tough to be a popular weatherman. This application just makes the life of the people easy.”
According to Skymet, the application will enable commuters to plan their workday and provide regular crop advisory to farmers. A Skymet spokesperson said, “Not just in Mumbai, the app provides short-term and long-term weather forecasts for over 6,500 locations across the country and 2,00,000 locations across the world.”
Skymet has set up 100 automatic weather stations in Mumbai to track live and accurate hyper-local monsoon and rain updates. “To save themselves from the hurdles of traffic and monsoon rains, commuters can now plan their day better by using this application. It allows them to know real-time rain alerts, accurate and timely weather forecast, interactive stories, pan-India weather videos, weather alerts and half-hourly generated satellite images. It is not only a weather application but also serves the users as a weather lifestyle application.”
For Mumbai users, apart from English, information is available in regional languages such as Marathi and Gujarati. Mumbaikars can now see the monsoon forecast and track every stroke of lightning in real time on the app.
