The woman whose decomposed body was found in a metal trunk in Vashi on Wednesday has been identified as Kiran Temba Sherapa (50), a resident of Turbhe Store. The police suspect her adopted son of the murder.
Ms. Sherapa was identified after her neighbours read news reports about the body and saw the picture of the trunk on Thursday.
According to the Vashi police, the son, around 20 years old, is missing. Witnesses saw him carrying a similar trunk a few days ago. A police official said, “Ms Sherapa, originally from Nepal, did housekeeping jobs and also made and sold wada s with a group of neighbouring women. The women had approached the Turbhe MIDC police saying that Ms. Sherapa was missing for a few days, but the police asked them to tell her son to file the complaint. The women then broke into Ms. Sherapa’s house. On finding nothing, secured the house with another lock.” He said the women approached the police on Thursday and identified the body.
Though Ms. Sherapa was from Nepal, the police are not sure about her son’s nationality. “He was unemployed and had frequent quarrels with Ms. Sherapa,” the official said. The neighbours said the clothes in the trunk belonged to Ms. Sherapa and her son. “They said the son was adopted. We have formed teams to trace him,” the official said.
