Two weeks after a Raigad policeman killed himself in the rest house of the police headquarters, the Alibaug police have booked six officers of the State Intelligence Department (SID), Mumbai, for abetment to suicide.
Assistant police inspector Prashant Kanerkar (49) got transferred to the Raigad police in June from the control room, SID, Mumbai. In his suicide note, he had mentioned names of six of his former colleagues at the SID control room, who had been mentally harassing him.
Kanerkar’s wife Pratiksha (43) on Thursday evening filed a complaint of abetment to suicide against the six. Based on the suicide note, a case was registered against Additional Deputy Commissioner Namrata Alaknure, Assistant Commissioners Prashant Langi and Inamdar, intelligence officers R.V. Shinde and Vijay Bansode, and assistant intelligence officer Ravindra Salvi. As per the complaint, when Kanerkar was posted with the control room in 2018, Mr. Langi had lost his wallet in office. All the six booked were on the night shift while Kanerkar was in the morning shift.
After Mr. Langi’s duty hours were over, Kanerkar took over. When Mr. Langi asked Kanerkar if he had seen his wallet, he denied.
“Later, Mr. Langi accused Kanerkar of stealing his wallet and gave a written complaint to Ms. Alaknure about the theft. Ms. Alaknure said a memo would be issued. After a couple of days, the wallet was found in the drawer of a keyboard and hence no memo was issued. In the suicide note, it is alleged that his former colleagues continued to taunt Kanerkar with the theft, which caused him mental harassment,” Sachin Gunjal, Additional Superintendent of Police, Raigad, said.
“First we will inquire with all the officials at the SID control room and record their statements. Depending on the evidence, we will take action,” Mr. Gunjal said.
