Six arrested for theft, assault on local train

Four of the accused are minors

The Wadala Government Railway Police have arrested six people, including four minors, in connection with an assault and theft case on a local train on Friday. Four of the six accused are aged between 14 and 17 years.

According to the police, the assault took place when the victims, brothers Rehmul Sheikh and Mohammad Sheikh, were returning from their hometown to the city. Around 3.45 p.m., the brothers reached Tilak Nagar station and boarded a local train to Kurla. They had entered the luggage compartment and the six accused got in behind them. One of the accused then picked Mr. Rehmul Sheikh’s wallet, which had ₹4,000 in it, and it led to an argument.

A police official said, “When the brothers confronted them, the accused turned violent and attacked the brothers. Apart from Mr. Rehmul Sheikh’s wallet, the accused stole Mr. Mohammad Sheikh’s silver chain.”

The accused continued to assault the brothers and attempted to push them off the train. When the train arrived at Kurla station, a minor accused pushed the brothers on to the platform and kept hitting them.

“The GRP personnel on duty at the platform noticed the attack and took the accused into custody. After interrogating him, we laid a trap for the rest of the accused at Kurla station. We then arrested all of them,” senior police inspector Rajendra Pal said.

The two adult accused have been identified as Jumun Salmani (21) and Riyazul Ansari (20). They have been remanded in custody for seven days. All the six accused have been charged under Sections 397 and 395 of the Indian Penal Code for robbery and dacoity with an attempt to cause death.
