A seven-year-old boy died after falling into a pit at a construction site in Kandivali on Tuesday.

According to the Kandivali police, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. when Aditya Chauhan was playing at a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) construction site in Ganesh Nagar. Aditya, a resident of a nearby slum, was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali where he was declared dead before admission.

“We have found that no barricades or signboards were placed around the pit,” senior police inspector Nitin Pondkule, Kandivali police station, said.

He said while an accidental death report has been prepared for the moment, inquiries have been initiated to explore the grounds for a case of causing death due to negligence.

The police are recording statements of labourers at the site and also making inquiries with the contractor regarding the safety measures in place. Sources said the contractor might be booked by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

“We are also contacting the SRA and seeking documents of the contracts signed with the contractor,” an officer with the Kandivali police said.

Mr. Pondkule said Aditya is survived by his parents and brother.
