Seven men were arrested from various States for killing their colleague in Uran following a drunken brawl.

The victim, Gulab Padghan (45), a helper at a quarry in Uran, stayed with seven colleagues who operated excavators.

The brawl

On September 13, all the eight men received a Ganeshotsav bonus from the quarry owner, which they decided to splurge on alcohol. “In the middle of party, Padghan went inside the house and started throwing his colleagues’ belongings out of the house. He was probably very inebriated. Taking offence to this, his seven colleagues bashed him to death using two huge stones,” senior inspector Nivrutti Kolhatkar from Uran police station said.

When the victim was throwing out their belongings, the seven men had called up their supervisor. The supervisor was busy in Ganesh puja, and hence did not answer the call. Early next day, the supervisor wanted a vehicle from the quarry and called the operators. When the calls went unanswered, he went to visit them and found Padghan dead. He then informed the police.

Three held from Ulwe

The police first nabbed Jayram Patel (43), Shrikant Patel (43), Chandrashekhar Patel (20) and Sandeep Patel (20) from Ulwe, where they were hiding. “They revealed the names of their colleagues who had by then fled to Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. With the help of the Nhava Sheva police, we formed teams who went to these States and nabbed the remaining three accused,” Mr. Kolhatkar said.

The three are Ashok Patel (26), Sandip Kol (20) and Vikas Singh (30). All seven accused have been remanded in police custody till Monday.
