School trustee held for child abuse

Thane Nagar police arrested Shilpa Gautam, the trustee of Gautam High School, on Friday, a day after students accused her of abusing them in class. Ms. Gautam was produced in court, which let her off on bail.

The police said 18 students of the school came to the station with their parents at 6.30 p.m. on Friday and filed a complaint against Ms. Gautam.

Senior police inspector M. Dharamadhikari said, “On Wednesday, the students from Classes V to X were placing benches in the class back after shifting them to practise for their annual day, when Ms. Gautam hit them with a fibre rod and locked the classroom’s door. She was furious at the students for waking her up from her afternoon nap.” Ms. Gautam had allegedly thrashed 50 students and 18 of them suffered head injuries and sustained fractures to their hands and legs. They were treated at Thane Civil Hospital. and discharged on Friday afternoon.

Ms. Gautam was arrested on Friday morning and produced in court at around 3 p.m. Her lawyer immediately bailed her out.
