Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday asked fishmongers from Chhatrapati Shivaji Mandi in Crawford Market to not vacate and move to Airoli, irrespective of the notices sent to them by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Mr. Thackeray’s assurance comes after a delegation of fishmongers held a meeting with him at his residence, asking for his support. “No matter how many notices the corporation send you, you need not worry and need not move. I will be meeting the Municipal Commissioner over the issue,” he told the delegation.

Less customers

The fishmongers have been strongly opposing the migration from south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai and have expressed anger as it will decrease the number of customers for fish, making it difficult for them to sustain.

The BMC served them notices last week, citing that the fish market is in a dilapidated condition.

The Koli women, mathadi workers and businessmen met the MNS chief to convey the loss they will be facing as a result of the move.

Mr. Thackeray assured them that he would find a solution for their situation.

For years, the fisherwomen have been buying the fish from wholesalers and occasionally from Colaba and Kasara dockers and selling them at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Mandi.

The Kolis had expressed fear that the BMC’s decision would disturb their livelihood as the Airoli Naka is several kilometres away from the city.
