Heavy rain caused the already-weakened pedestrian section of the busy Gokhale bridge, connecting Andheri (W) to Andheri (E) to collapse onto the tracks.

Less than a year after the Elphinstone Road station stampede, which claimed 39 lives, heavy rain caused the already-weakened pedestrian section of the busy Gokhale bridge, connecting Andheri (W) to Andheri (E) to collapse onto the tracks. The incident left five injured, of whom one is critical.

The city received heavy rain on Tuesday, leading to waterlogging in chronic flooding in many parts including Hindmata, King’s circle, and Gandhi Market.

On a day when office-goers faced difficulty in reaching their workplaces, the city’s dabbawalas suspended all their tiffin box deliveries on the Western line and a section of the Harbour line.

Bad weather delayed aircraft arrivals among many other incidents in Mumbai:

  • 13 incidents of slab collapse were reported in Mumbai
  • A man was killed and two of his family members were injured after a 30-foot compound wall collapsed on their house.
  • A fire broke out at Kamala Mills.
  • BMC used 214 pumps to drain water.
  • Train services were suspended due to the bridge collapse in Andheri; sudden suspension of services led to overcrowding across stations, and commuters were left stranded.
