Prompt action by railway security staff and a motorman helped prevent a suicide attempt at Mumbai Central station on Friday. The incident occurred on platform number 3 of the station around 7 p.m. and was captured on a CCTV camera.
The camera footage shows Vaman Govind Kamble, 64, climbing down from the platform and lying on the tracks just as the train entered the platform from the Virar end. Other commuters on the platform, upon realising the man’s intent, started signalling the train to stop.
Manoj Ghodke and Ravindra Vase of the Maharashtra Security Force, who were on patrol duty on platform number 3, noticed the commotion and jumped onto the tracks to save Mr. Kamble from the approaching train. A railway official said. “Since there was a local train on platform no. 4, there was still a risk of being stranded between two tracks.”
Meanwhile, Laxman Singh Meena, the motorman of the train, saw commuters frantically signalling him to stop and applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt at a safe distance from where the officials were standing with Mr. Kamble.
A resident of MHADA colony in Sion Koliwada, Mr. Kamble was handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF), who then called his son and sent him with his family.
