Ashok Dalvi (49), the man suspected to have murdered a 40-year-old woman at a lodge in Vashi on Sunday, is yet to be traced, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, Mr. Dalvi, a resident of Ghansoli, was bankrupt and was suffering from depression for many months.

“We suspect that the murder was the result of some discord in the relationship between the two of them. The woman’s husband left her many years ago, and later killed himself in 2011. Mr. Dalvi’s wife too died a few years ago, after he and the victim started a relationship,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Sudhakar Pathare said.

The woman’s body was found at Sankalp Lodge in Vashi on Sunday evening, half naked and with a slit throat. The police had found two Aadhaar cards with the woman’s photo and different names, in the room. Following further investigation, the police learnt that the victim, Uma Malvadkar, who used to be a resident of Nehru Nagar in Vile Parle, had changed her name to Manda Sukhadare after marriage and was now a resident of Ghansoli.

The victim worked in a private firm as a labourer. “The couple mostly met in lodges where the victim stayed as he was jobless. He has two sons, one of whom is employed. The victim lived with a roommate in Ghansoli and had no children,” Mr. Pathare said.

According to the police, the couple had checked into the lodge around 4 p.m., and around 5 p.m., Mr. Dalvi rushed out of the building. When the security guard asked him where he was going and where the woman was, he did not respond and ran away.

The guard, on checking the room on the second floor, found the woman dead. He informed the manager of the lodge, who in turn alerted the police.
