Volunteers cleaning Dadar beach have come up with a unique way of dealing with plastic bottles found strewn around, by creating a vertical garden made from plastic bottles collected from Worli village.
The group, led by Chinu Kwatra has been conducting cleanliness drives on Dadar beach for the past nine months and has diversified their efforts to Worli village in the past two-and-a-half months. Their vertical garden was inaugurated by Abhijeet Sawant this Saturday in celebration of 15 weeks of clean-up effort in Worli.
The project was undertaken as a measure to greenify instead of simply beautifying’ areas earlier covered with trash in Dadar and Worli.
“We wanted to encourage the residents of Worli village to reuse and recycle their plastic. Some internet surfing led to the idea of a vertical garden,” said Mr. Kwatra.
The garden is made up of 52 bottles collected from Worli village, 52 generic garden plants costing ₹1,500 and nylon rope for ₹200.
Depending on the success of this project over the next 10 days, they will build a vertical garden stretching across the entire expanse of Dadar beach.
In their 15-week effort at Worli village, they have cleaned up nearly 35 tonnes of garbage, and 251 tonnes of garbage was collected at Dadar beach in collaboration with the BMC. This Environment Day, on June 5 the team is extending its efforts to Juhu beach, and the Sundays that follow will see simultaneous efforts by the team at Dadar and Juhu.
