Part of ceiling collapses in Vashi’s Raghuleela Mall

A portion of the ceiling of Raghuleela Mall in Vashi collapsed due to dampness around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. No casualties were reported.

“Being afternoon on a weekday, there was hardly any crowd. The plaster of Paris (PoP) work at the circumference of the roof fell onto the third floor. Leakage might have caused the PoP to get damp. When we came to know of the collapse, we evacuated and shut the mall,” manager Rajendra Shinde said.

The mall staff cleaned the debris and removed the remaining damp PoP. “Our priority was to make the mall safe. We reopened the mall only after the fire brigade team ruled out possible danger,” Mr. Shinde said.

An officer from Vashi fire station said they were alerted about the incident by the disaster management cell of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. “After the photos went viral, we got a call from disaster management around 4.30 p.m. We checked the mall thoroughly and then allowed it to be reopened,” he said.

The police said there were no casualties. “Apart from the PoP and the aluminium frames used to hold it, nothing had come off. We visited the site and nobody was reported as injured. We have not been intimated about injuries by any hospital. If investigation reveals any negligence, we will register a case accordingly,” inspector Nitin Gite of the Vashi police said.
