John Bailey, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, will be the special invitee for this year’s Maharashtra State Marathi Film Awards ceremony on May 26, Cultural Affairs Minister Vinod Tawde said on Monday.

“It is for the first time that the president of the academy will be part of an awards ceremony in India. This is an effort to highlight the experiments and the initiatives being taken in Marathi cinema,” Mr. Tawde said.

The minister said the government has been trying to create a special space for Marathi cinema through various measures. “From Goa to Cannes, we are trying to screen as many Marathi films as possible to ensure that producers and directors from across the world watch these films,” he said.

Mr. Bailey will be in Mumbai on May 25 and 26, during which he will be meeting members of the film industry. “We believe his visit will be beneficial not only to Marathi cinema but also to the entire film industry. Academy member Ujjwal Nirgudkar had personally met Mr. Bailey to invite him for the awards ceremony and he had agreed to be present,” the minister said.

This is the 56th year of the Maharashtra State Marathi Film Awards ceremony. Among the categories to be presented are V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award, V. Shantaram Special Contribution Award, Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award, and Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award.

Re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the second time in August 2017, Mr. Bailey is the first cinematographer to hold the position. He has worked on films like Ordinary People (1980), American Gigolo (1980), The Big Chill (1983), Groundhog Day (1993), As Good as It Gets (1997), The Anniversary Party (2001), The Way Way Back (2013), and A Walk in the Woods (2015). In 2015, the American Society of Cinematographers presented him a lifetime achievement award.
