Odisha CM launches Biju Patnaik biography

Book captures Biju’s fascinating life

Mumbai: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the pictorial biography of his late father and two-time CM of the State Biju Patnaik in Mumbai on Saturday, and said his ideas transcended geographical boundaries.

“In 1951, four years after independence, Biju Patnaik (36) gave a donation of 1000 pounds for setting up of Kalinga Prize for Science which was given by UNESCO for presenting scientific ideas for common people. The young entrepreneur from Odisha started a prize in the international level which was considered an alternative to Noble Prize. It was not a mean achievement. His main mission in life was to restore the pride of Odisha and create international recognition for Kalinga (ancient Odisha),” Mr Patnaik said.

The book, titled The Tall Man Biju Patnaik captures the life and times of the independence era air force pilot who went on to lead Odisha twice. Born in 1916, he had started his own airline in 1947 called Kalinga Airlines, and a conglomerate by the same name.
