Not happy with the duty roster for the next day, a PSI from Raigad police assaulted a constable with the butt of his pistol injuring the latter on his head.

The incident happened on Tuesday night when constable Mangesh Nigade from reserve force in Raigad police, informed his colleague police sub-inspector Ashwin Jadhav that he was assigned to escort accused to court on Wednesday.

‘Just doing my job’

Mr. Jadhav who had just reached the office after Shivaji Jayanti bandobast duty got angry and started quarrelling with Mr. Nigade. “The duty list is made by seniors and Mr. Nigade maintains the register of duty. He is supposed to inform staff of the duty assigned, and also maintain a record of officers present for duty,” said a police officer from Alibaug.

Mr. Nigade told Mr. Jadhav that he was just doing his job of informing him and it is not in his hands to assign or change the anyone’s duty. Mr. Jadhav then assaulted Mr. Nigade with the butt of his pistol after which he was rushed to Alibaug Civil Hospital by his colleagues, where he was discharged after first aid.

Internal inquiry ordered

Anil Paraskar, Superintendent of Police of Raigad, said, “The medical reports suggest that the injuries were minor in nature. An internal inquiry has been initiated by Deputy Superintendent of Police and after a report is filed, both Mr. Nigade and Mr. Jadhav will be called and their statements recorded. After that I will decide on the action to be taken. As of now, no case has been registered.”
