No water supply in South Mumbai tomorrow

South Mumbai will be without water supply between 8 a.m and 8 p.m. on Thursday, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to carry out improvement and repair works on the Tansa pipeline.

Affected parts

Areas across seven municipal wards — A, C, D, E, G North, G South and H West — will be affected due to the repair works. These include Nariman Point, Backbay, Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Navy Nagar, Pedder Road, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Walkeshwar Road, Nepean Sea Road, Carmichael Road, Altamount Road, Tardeo, Senapati Bapat Marg, Worli, Lower Parel and parts of Bandra as well. Water supply to Nair Hospital and Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli will also be affected.

The work

The repair work is being done on the main water pipeline that runs underground at Mahim Cabin, near the creek where a shaft connects the main pipeline to the zonal supply network. The entire pipeline runs from Marol Maroshi to Mahalaxmi Race Course via Vakola and Ruparel College, with shafts at Maroshi, Vakola, Mahim and Ruparel.

“The entire tunnel needs to be isolated for the works. As the work is complex, we require a complete day to execute it. This is being done to improve the water supply to the city,” Vijay Khabale, Chief Public Relations Officer, BMC, said.
