Senior citizens, people with disabilities write to PCMC commissioner seeking help

Senior citizens and people with disabilities in Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have written to commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh complaining against the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport’s refusal to provide concessions. Senior citizens are entitled to 50% concession, and people with disabilities are given 75% concession on their bus fare.

Devidas Kharche (69), a resident of Kharghar, said, “Last year, my wife and I paid ₹50 to secure a senior citizens’ pass from Belapur. The pass assured us 50% concession on NMMT bus fares for three years. Now, we are being denied the concession as we fall under the PCMC and not the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The NMMT uses the Asud gao bus depot in Panvel, but deny residents of the area the benefits of using the bus services.”

Shirish Aradwad, general manager of NMMT, said he has written to the PCMC and the Uran Municipal Council. He said, “Talks are on with the PCMC. We have told the civic body that its residents will be given concessions if it is ready to bear the losses incurred by the NMMT by giving out these concessions.”

Netra Kiran Patil, corporator of Ward 4B in Kharghar, said she recently met Mr. Deshmukh to discuss the issue. She said, “In a recent meeting, the senior citizens in my ward informed me that they were being denied the concession since October 1. Many residents from my ward travel to NMMC daily. It is not fair to deny them concession. Mr. Deshmukh has promised to take up the issue with Mr. Aradwad.”

Mr. Deshmukh said, “I will be meeting NMMC commissioner N. Ramaswami and requesting him to continue providing concession in PCMC too. It has mutual benefits. If they use our roads and get passengers from PCMC, then our residents should get the same benefits as NMMC residents.”
