The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) General Body on Tuesday decided to from a panel to scrutinise the decisions taken by its former civic chief Tukaram Mundhe.
The decision was taken after a resolution was placed by Nerul Corporator Ravindra Ithape. Mr. Mundhe was NMMC Commissioner from May 2016 to March 2017. Three months after his transfer, Mr. Ithape raised questions on the decisions he had made during his tenure.
Mr. Ithape claimed that Mr Mundhe’s decisions led to financial losses to the civic body. Following Mr. Ithape’s allegations, other corporators unanimously agreed to form a 15-member committee headed by a retired judge or an IAS officer to conduct a detailed probe into the policy decisions taken by Mr. Mundhe.
“It was a resolution moved by Mr. Ithape and it is purely his views. The administration has no role in the inquiry,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Ankush Chavan. Mr. Ithape said, “Mr. Mundhe’s took decisions without seeking the approval of the general body. His decisions resulted in financial loss for the corporation. The officer should be held accountable and so an inquiry is essential.”
He added, “Mr. Mundhe used to issue work orders without inviting tender bids. He used to issue departmental action on anyone without proper procedure or inquiry. Such actions led to large-scale litigations. I have pointed out 10 of his decisions that led to financial loss and strain.”
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sudhakar Sonawane said, “Once the probe committee submits its report, it will be sent to the State government, which will then decide on the course of action.”
