NMMC bars firm after falling gate kills child

More than six months after a 12-year-old boy died and an 11-year-old was injured after the gate of an under-construction civic school fell on them in Bonkode, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has blacklisted the company responsible for monitoring the construction.

Municipal Commissioner N. Ramaswami said on Thursday the decision was taken last week. “The NMMC will not engage any work with the company, ‘The Firm’, for the next three years. The inquiry into the incident revealed that the firm was responsible for preparing and implementing the design of the building and monitoring the work at the site. As per the approved design, there were supposed to be two sliding gates, but instead they installed a single long gate,” he said. The incident on May 25 claimed the life of Saurabh Chaudhary, a Class V student.
