Women as drug mules on the rise: cops

The number of women in drug trafficking is on the rise, according to new data from the city police, which shows that women are being used as conduits for smuggling of narcotic substances being sold online. As many as 63 women have been arrested this year across the state, with 59 cases registered against women under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The figure last year was 255.

Presenting the findings in the Legislative Assembly last week, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said smugglers and drug peddlers are using a sophisticated code and luring potential customers using women agents as bait. He added that the drugs being sold online using women as conduits include opium, heroin, cocaine, methaqualone, morphine, ephedrine, LSD, acetic anhydride and amphetamine.

“To control this trade, the police has laid emphasis on setting up special cells for drug control in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur, and Aurangabad. At the same time, we are looking at making policy changes to counter the online sale of these substances,” Fadnavis said in his written reply to questions by legislators on the sudden spike in drug trafficking. He added that cyber crime labs are being proposed in all districts to combat the online sale of banned substances including on social media.

Senior officials said the numbers are a cause for concern, given that many Nigerians are marrying Indian women to access bank accounts and extend their stay in the country. The annual case count for Mumbai according to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) was 1,512 in 2012, followed by Delhi with 829 cases registered related to the drug trade. Senior police officials said the drug trade through India extends to North America and Europe.
