The State government recently told the Bombay High Court that it will vacate a bungalow and servant quarters owned by the government so that the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal can get additional space.

A division bench of Justices Abhay Oka and PD Naik was hearing PILs on the availability of infrastructure for the state commission and various district forums under the Consumer Protection Act. The PIL also highlights the issue regarding allotment of adequate premises to the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, the Co-operative Court and the Co-operative Appellate court.

As per the HC’s directions, a committee was constituted to make a realistic estimate of the area required by the courts and tribunals mentioned in the petition while taking future needs into account. The government pleader informed the court that at the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, there is a bungalow occupied by the state government and servants quarters occupied by state government employees. He also said that within three months, the state government will obtain possession of the said premises and will hand over the same for use by the tribunal.

The GP also told the court that the chairman of the tribunal will be informed about the details of the premises after three months of possession so that the chairman can then submit a proposal to the state government through the High Court administration for carrying out necessary changes, providing furniture and other facilities in the additional premises. The court has scheduled the matter for June 16 to pass directions on providing infrastructure and other facilities to district forums and state commissions.
