Vijaya Rahatkar appointed Women’s Commission chief

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday cleared the appointment of BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vijaya Rahatkar as the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission.

Rahatkar, who served as the Mayor of Aurangabad Municipal Corporation from 2007 to 2010, was made the women’s wing chief in August 2014 during Amit Shah’s first tenure as BJP president.

Rahatkar’s appointment is expected to revitalise the activities of the State Women’s Commission, which has been headless since October 2014, when the Devendra Fadnavis government came to power.

The commission, which has an office in Bandra, was similarly ignored during the Congress-NCP government’s tenure. The chairperson’s post was left vacant from 2009 to January 1, 2014, when Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan appointed Susieben Shah as the chairperson for a brief 10-month term.
