The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau on Tuesday arrested the senior police inspector in charge of the MHB police station in Mumbai for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from the owner of a studio in Borivali.
According to ACB officials, the complainant’s studio is part of an unauthorised building in Borivali, and falls under the jurisdiction of the MHB Police station. ACB officials said that Subhash Chavan who is in charge of the police station would frequently call the complainant to the police station with documents about the building and ultimately demanded Rs 4 lakh from him in exchange for not taking action against him.
The complainant approached the ACB and submitted a written complaint against Chavan, after which the ACB made further inquiries and confirmed that Chavan was indeed demanding a bribe from the complainant. The ACB then laid a trap, and on Tuesday, Chavan was arrested after he allegedly accepted the first instalment of Rs 3 lakh of the bribe amount.
ACB officials are currently conducting searches of Chavan’s office and residence.
