Subiya Sozab Bharmal, sister of Hasnain Warekar, who survived the killing spree which left 14 of her family members dead, had a chilling tale to tell the police. Constable Meera Kedar told mediapersons, “When I asked her why she did not scream, she said, ‘bhai kisi ko chillane nahi de raha tha’ [He did not let anyone scream]. He had a sharp weapon and did not let anyone escape. She said she did not know why he did this. On Saturday night, the family ate food and went off to sleep. There was no fight during the dinner and according to her he had no dispute with his parents or wife.”

According to statements by Subiya and the neighbours, Hasnain had invited his three sisters for a ‘davat’ (celebration). Their fourth sister, Batul Warekar, who is not married, lived in the same house with their parents and brother’s family.

The immediate neighbours, whose house is inches away from ‘Warekar Manzil’, said they first heard Subiya’s scream’s at around 3 am. “She was saying Shaista chachi bachao bachao. I told my son Altamas to check. He gathered other neighbours and went,” neighbour and relative Shaista Warekar told The Hindu.

“I gathered around 10-12 people. We had to break the window grill to pull her out. She said, bhai ne kiya [brother did it]. We sent her to the hospital and informed the police. He is my relative, but I have no idea why he did it,” Shaista’s son, Altamas said.

According to several testimonies, Hasnain’s father Anwar Warekar had bought a butcher’s knife for ‘qurbani’ (sacrificing goats). Hasnain allegedly used this knife to kill his family before hanging himself.

Bodies of the victims were sent to Thane Civil hospital for post-mortem examination. The police have collected their stomach wash and viscera samples and sent them for forensic examination. A team from the Kalina Forensic laboratory came to the house on Sunday.

The police ruled out the possibility of an outside hand as the doors were locked from inside.
