Govt to roll out new parking policy

March 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MUMBAI:

Out of the 46,366 parking lots approved under the Development Control Regulation (DCR) by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, only 3,081 have been handed over to the corporation, said the State government on Tuesday.

The government will be initiating action in three months against the developers who have benefited from the Floor Space Index but have not handed over the parking areas to the corporation.

Ranjit Patil, Minister of Home for Urban Development Department, while replying to questions raised by Congress MLAs from Mumbai, said a new parking policy will soon be introduced in the city which will facilitate construction of underground parking lots on the lines of the one at Connaught Place in New Delhi.

“DCR will soon be modified to accommodate the suggestion. However, there will be no underground parking beneath bigger grounds such as Shivaji Park, Azad Maidan, Oval or Cross Maidan.”

He said the number of cars in Mumbai in the next five years is estimated to be around 15 lakh. “The number of vehicles entering Mumbai right now is around 2.5 lakh and that is the reason why we need a new parking policy.”

Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Amin Patel seeking information on the completed work on parking lots, Mr Patil sai that the proposals at 61 places with 46,366 parking lots have been approved. “While construction at 13 parking zones with 6,872 parking lots has been completed, only six have been handed over to the corporation. In all it has 3,081 parking lots.”

A high-power committee comprising MLAs will be formed to probe the delay in construction of parking lots despite approvals, he added.
