December 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 02:15 pm IST - MUMBAI:

A 15-year-old girl tried to take her own life on Friday at the Malad railway station by standing in the path of an oncoming train.

The motorman, however, saw her from afar and managed to stop the train in time to avoid running her over.

According to railway police officers, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Churchgate bound platform of the Malad railway station.

The police said that the girl climbed off the platform and stood on the tracks while a train to Churchgate was approaching, leading to alarm among other people.

Presence of mind

However, the motorman of the train, which was still some distance away, saw her and immediately started decreasing the speed, so that he could stop the train before he reached the spot where she was standing.

Meanwhile, railway police officers rushed to the scene and took the girl into custody.

Reason unclear

“The girl was mentally disturbed. The reason behind her suicide attempt is not clear. We contacted her parents and handed her over to them,” said Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Patil, Borivali railway police, under whose jurisdiction the Malad station falls.
