A fight broke out between two groups of inmates in the Arthur Road Jail on Monday morning. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident that occurred at around 8:45 a.m. in the circle no. 7 of the jail.

In the middle of the fight, two of the inmates — identified as Sarwar Khan and Suleiman Patel — attacked two others — identified as Vishal Amkar and Murugan Nadar — with sharp weapons fashioned out of steel plates from the kitchen. Amkar and Nadar sustained injuries to their hands and faces, while Khan, Patel and another inmate from their camp, identified as Mudassar Ansari, suffered minor injuries.

“Prison guards at the circle were unable to break up the fight and raised an alarm, following which additional personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The five injured inmates were taken to JJ Hospital,” said a prison official. Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay said, “We have no record of these inmates fighting or quarrelling before and the reason behind the altercation is still not clear. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Swati Sathe has been instructed to conduct an inquiry.”

Arthur Road officials subsequently informed the N M Joshi Marg police, under whose jurisdiction the prison falls, and a team from the police station visited the prison on Monday evening to conduct inquiries.
