‘Escort services website not blocked’

The State government told the Bombay High Court on Wednesday that it hasn’t blocked websites that run advertisements offering escort services.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice PD Naik was hearing a Public Interest Litigation by activist Ali Ahmed Siddique, stating that prostitution is banned and advertisements on websites allowing and encouraging this activity should also be banned. Government pleader Purnima Kantharia filed an affidavit stating that they have taken into account 25 cases registered in 2014 under Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA), 32 cases in 2015 and two cases in 2016. These cases were registered based on information collected from websites and newspapers, the state told the court. It said the police will continue to initiate action against wrongdoers without any delay, and as and when required.

In its affidavit, the state said it had enquired with the Mumbai Police cyber crime cell at Bandra Kurla Complex on the cases they had registered under the POCSO and the PITA.
