The body of 19-year-old Ibrahim Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, who drowned off Juhu beach on Sunday afternoon, washed ashore late on Sunday night.

Sheikh had gone to Juhu beach along with his three friends on Sunday afternoon, when he got swept away by the high tide. While the Coast Guard and fire fighters searched for him until late, they couldn’t trace his body. The body washed ashore at around 11.30pm. Sheikh’s body was handed over to his relatives after port-mortem.

Coast guards on the beach said they had sounded the alarm for the high tide. Rajaram Singh, who owns a chaat stall at the beach, said: “The boys were busy playing and swimming in the water. Ibrahim went deep inside even when the lifeguards warned them about the high tide. The other three boys came out.”

The lifeguards said they patrol the beach but it is difficult to keep an eye on everyone. Navel David, head lifeguard at the Juhu beach, said: “His parents are holding us responsible for his death, but we told them that their son was well informed about the high tide. It is sad that even after several warnings, people don’t listen to us.”
