Bharuch double murder: NIA files charge sheet

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet in the murders of two BJP leaders in Bharuch, Gujarat claiming the killings were part of a larger conspiracy by fugitive terrorist and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s gang members based in Pakistan and South Africa.

The first charge sheet by NIA in the sensational double murder case has named 10 accused who allegedly conspired to create terror in the country by targeting local politicians.

The central agency said charge sheets against two more arrested accused, Abdul Samad and Nasir Khan Pathan, will be filed later. The charge sheet was filed against accused Saiyed Imran, Zuheb Ansari, Inayat Patel, Mohmad Yunus, Haider Ali, Nissarbhai Sheikh, Mohsin Khan Pathan, Mohmed Altaf Shaikh, Abid Patel and Abdul Salim Ghanchi.

Shirish Bangali, a former BJP president for Bharuch and senior RSS member and Pragnesh Mistry, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha were shot dead in the district by two unidentified gunmen last November. After the initial probe by the state police, the case was handed over to NIA on the grounds that the murders were committed at the instance of people from cross-border locations.

As per the charge sheet submitted before the special NIA court of principal judge PB Desai, the case relates to murder of two persons as part of a larger conspiracy in which co-accused located in foreign countries too were conspiring to kill and strike terror in the minds of people belonging to a particular section of society.

It claimed that during the investigation, roles played by co-accused located in Pakistan and South Africa has also emerged and the investigation is being continued to collect more evidence against the accused.

Along with the charge sheet, NIA has also submitted three applications before the court seeking permission to keep the identity of some witnesses confidential, details of certain documents hidden and NIA protection for witnesses whose statements have been recorded by NIA.

In all, 12 accused were arrested in connection with the case and booked under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, IPC, Arms Act the Gujarat Police Act.

Officials said the killings were contracted by Javed Chikna, a top Dawood aide wanted in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. Chikna’s brother Abid Patel has also been chargesheeted in the case.

During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Chikna and others associated with the Dawood Ibrahim gang instructed a local module to kill BJP leaders to avenge the 1993 Mumbai riots and 2002 riots, as per NIA officials working on the case.
