Thane police question Mamta Kulkarni’s sister

The Thane police, investigating the Rs. 2,000-crore ephedrine haul case, are gathering evidence against former Bollywood actor Mamta Kulkarni, who has been booked in the case. Kulkarni, along with her husband Vicky Goswami, have been accused of running an international drug racket from Kenya.

The Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Thane Crime Branch had called Molina Mukund Kulkarni (50), the actor’s elder sister, and Sanjay Sharma, a bank manager, for questioning. “We sent summons to both of them as we found that they were in touch with Kulkarni. Mr. Sharma used to take care of her bank accounts,” said an official.

Ms. Mukund Kulkarni, who resides in Mira Road, was questioned about Kulkarni’s background, and whether she was aware of her drug business. But she claimed she was unaware. “She claims that she is in regular touch with her over the phone. Both of them contact each other and discuss their well-being,” said a police officer. Mr. Sharma has been called in for the third time for questioning. “In his statement, he claims that he was in regular touch with Kulkarni for over 15 years, since she first came to open an account in the bank. Till three months ago, he used to get calls from Kulkarni, asking to check the account status or transfer cash. Mr. Sharma claims that she had more than six accounts in the bank,” added the official.
