The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday unveiled its first-ever ‘mohalla clinic’ in Mumbai, an initiative that the party says has been hugely successful in Delhi.
The clinic was inaugurated at Kurla Amar Co-operative Housing Society at Kamani, near Phoenix Market City in Kurla West, by the party’s National Executive Member Sanjay Singh.
“The main objective of the clinic is to provide quality, affordable healthcare to the severely deprived aam aadmi of the city. The clinic will function as a primary healthcare centre plus polyclinic. It will provide free basic drugs and free consultations with doctors, something the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government has been unable to provide in spite of a budget of Rs. 40,000 crore,” said Satish Jain, the party’s Mumbai Metropolitan Region co-ordinator.
Though the clinic is based on AAP’s Delhi model, the party says the Mumbai facility differs slightly; it has no financial support from the State and will sustain itself on donations from volunteers and well wishers.
When asked whether AAP is preparing to contest the civic polls, Mr. Jain said the party leadership gave positive signals in Sunday’s programme, but has not taken any formal decision.
“We will announce the decision soon,” he said.
