A former Army man and the mother of a three-and-a-half-year-old boy were let off on bail after they were produced in court on Monday. The duo was arrested by the Kamothe police on Sunday night after the boy’s babysitter noticed bruises on his body and filed a police complaint.

The police had registered a non-cognisable offence on Saturday and filed an FIR on Sunday.

Ashok Dudhe, deputy commissioner of police (Zone II), said circumstantial and technical evidence indicate that Uday Ramraj Singh (35), an ex-Army man and the child’s neighbour, assaulted the boy.

A police official said the child claimed Mr. Singh had hit him with a belt. The officer said, “Mr. Singh said the child might have fallen and injured himself. Later, during interrogation, Mr. Singh said that he hit the child with his hand for being naughty.”

‘Minor injuries’

Police inspector Baburao Deshmukh said a medical examination showed that the boy had sustained minor external injuries.

The police said that Mr. Singh was a friend of the boy’s mother and she was aware of the assault on her child. The boy’s father is in the merchant navy and away on duty. Mr. Singh and the mother were booked under Section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
