Forty-two passengers on board an Alliance Air flight from Mumbai to Shirdi had some anxious moments on Monday when the aircraft overshot the runway while landing and ended up in the Runway Safety Area. All passengers were reported to be safe.
Shirdi airport officials said the ATR aircraft overshot the runway by 50 metres at 4.50 p.m. “Emergency services were pressed into service immediately after the incident and all passengers were evacuated from the aircraft safely,” an official said. Alliance Air is the regional arm of national carrier Air India.
“There were 42 passengers on board the ATR aircraft,” officials said.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will investigate the incident.
Built at an investment of around ₹350 crore, the airport at Shirdi was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 1 last year. With a 2,500-metre runway, it is capable of handling narrow-body aircraft, such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 737s.
In May 2010, 152 people were killed at Mangaluru when an Air India Express flight from Dubai overshot the runway.
