Mumbai saw heavy rainfall from the early morning on July 8. While the city received only 30 mm rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8.30 a.m on July 8, between 8.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m, the city recorded 108.2 mm rainfall.
The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded this figure while the Colaba observatory recorded 12.2 mm rainfall. The figures given by Santacruz observatory are considered representative of entire Mumbai.
Some of the areas that saw the highest rainfall in this duration include Marol (121 mm), Kurla (120 mm), Vikhroli (114mm) and Vile Parle (100 mm).
Wall collapse
A portion of a slab collapsed in Govandi around 2 a.m., injuring eight. Three of them are being treated at Rajawadi Hospital and are stable. Another wall collapsed in an industrial estate in Andheri East but no casualty was reported.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours for Mumbai. A high tide of 4.39 m at 4.30 p.m. has been predicted.
In a warning issued at 12.51 p.m., the IMD forecast intense spells of rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places in Mumbai city and suburbs in the next two hours.
