Navi Mumbai: Even a month after the fire at Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd. (SHCI), Mahape MIDC, the reason behind the blaze is unclear. The fire brigade is awaiting reports from the factory inspector of MIDC and the electricity department.

“The company claims short circuit as the reason, but we cannot confirm without the reports,” fire officer R.B. Patil said. The flames that continued for 14 days is the second biggest in the MIDC area.

“A few years ago, there was a fire in a food godown, which went on for 51 days,” Mr. Patil said.

The SHCI has been tight-lipped about the losses and the documents damaged.

The fire that started on December 11 at the bay four of the basement, was doused and cooled by December 24.

Fire officers had to break around 25 glass panels and dug around five holes on the ground on the sixth day.

The 50-foot-deep basement had no exit door and ventilation, which worsened the situation. The fire brigade confirmed that the SHCI had all necessary fire equipment.
