Metro service reaches 400-million milestone

Ridership grew by 13% last year

Mumbai Metro One reached a new milestone on Monday, when it ferried its 400 millionth passenger. The Metro service between Versova and Ghatkopar saw a 13% growth in ridership in 2017-18.

According to Mumbai Metro One, the service has been attracting commuters at a faster rate, with the last 100 million added in 300 days. It had taken 398 days for the service to reach 100 million passengers, and 388 and 337 days, respectively, for the 200 and 300 million milestones.

Busy sections

Ridership on sections between Andheri station and Western Express Highway, and Andheri station and Azad Nagar grew at 48% and 45% respectively over the previous year— the highest of all sections. The station with the highest ridership continues to be Andheri, which is used by 1.05 lakh passengers on an average on a weekday.

The Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) has been running the service for over three years, and operates 378 to 382 trips between Versova and Ghatkopar daily. In 2017-18, it operated 1.2 lakh trips. According to MMOPL, the 11.4-km stretch is the eighth-densest Metro rail corridor in the world.
