The third phase of Mumbai Metro will be completed by 2021 and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai will be ready by 2022, Ryoji Noda, Consul-General of Japan in Mumbai, has said.
Mr. Noda was speaking at the 12th Anniversary CII — VLFM/CSM Learning Convention organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. He said, “Japan has committed ₹45 billion towards Mumbai Metro 3 project, which will be completed in 2021; and ₹90 billion towards MTHL, which will be completed in 2022.”
Having received ₹220 billion, India is the largest beneficiary under Japan’s Overseas Development Assistance and Mumbai is one of the focus areas of assistance. Japan will support India in achieving its goals in fields such as investments, technology transfer, handling air, water and sea pollution and urban waste. Mr. Noda said the country will be leading in terms of population in another 10 years.
He said, “There are estimates that the city is expected to be the highest populated city in world in the highly populated country in 2032. If Mumbai is creates 7,000 tonnes of urban waste every day, that means it is creating 210,000 tonnes of waste every month.” Mr. Noda said Japan, which recycles 85% of pet bottles, can help India in handling the issue better.
On the bullet train project, Mr. Noda said, “The high speed rail project in the western part of India between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is important for us.” He said that the project would ensure trust and safety of users, responsible and timely disbursement in construction, and a safety net.
