Mumbai: Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of an APMC market worker Mohammad Haseem Mohammad Jumrati (40), who was found dead on February 12 in an isolated area in Turbhe MIDC.

The accused, arrested on Monday, have been identified as Mohammad Yahiya Siddiqui (41), the main accused, and his associate Mohammad Naruddin Siddiqui (30). The former was a neighbour of the deceased in Mankhurd. The two families used to have frequent fights.

During one of these fights in January, Jumrati’s wife and her relatives assaulted the main accused’s wife. Jumrati had started behaving arrogantly with his neighbour due to these fights.

Assistant Police Inspector Arjun Gaikwad, from Turbhe MIDC Police Station, said, “Siddiqui was fed up of the regular fights and decided to eliminate Jumrati to teach his wife a lesson.”

After finding the body, police questioned Jumrati’s wife, and the main accused and his wife. Siddiqui became a suspect after his statements contradicted his mobile location details. He also accused Jumrati’s elder brother Jainun Jumrati for the murder, claiming that he killed Jumrati over property dispute.

Mr. Gaikward said, “[Jainun’s] statements were clear and satisfactory and we suspected Siddiqui even more [after the questioning].”

Siddiqui later confessed to the crime during a detailed investigation.

On February 12, the main accused had asked Jumrati to accompany him for some work and had informed his associate, Mohammad Naruddin Siddiqui, to meet them at Sanpada Railway Station. Mr. Gaikwad said, “Siddiqui had allured his associate with a job in a garment company and some cash, for which he agreed to join him.”

They travelled to an isolated place opposite Vishal Hotel in Turbhe MIDC, where the main accused excused himself to answer nature’s call. He later attacked Jumrati from behind and strangulated him with a belt. The duo fled from the spot after confirming the death, police said.
