A man sustained serious head injuries after he fell out of a moving train to catch the person who stole his phone. The victim, Sachindra Kumar, has been unconscious since then and is undergoing treatment.

The incident occurred on November 2 around 1.30 a.m., when the train was about to leave Belapur station.“The accused seems to have boarded at Sanpada and snatched the victim’s mobile phone as soon as the train started moving from Belapur station. He jumped out of the train but fell while doing so,” Rajesh Babshetty, senior police inspector, Panvel Government Railway Police station, said. The staff present at the platform went to aid the accused who ran away as soon as he could. “Seconds later the victim jumped and hurt his head. The homeguard constable turned his attention to him as he was badly injured and rushed him to the hospital. Since the train had picked up speed the impact from the fall seems to have been more severe,” Mr. Babshetty said.

The Panvel railway police registered a case on Wednesday under sections of the IPC pertaining to theft. Since the victim had been unconscious since the day of the incident, the police had to get a formal testimony from a co-passenger and also relied on CCTV footage. Mr. Babshetty said they are still searching for the accused, who was said to be under the influence of alcohol.

Sachindra Kumar lives in Kamothe with his wife, child and brother, Gajendra Kumar. Mr. Gajendra said that his brother was returning home from Bhandup, where he worked as a restaurant manager, and had boarded the train from Kurla. The victim was taken to MGM Hospital immediately, however, Mr. Gajendra said that they shifted him to Apollo since he required a CT scan. “We had to shift him because the government hospital was not acting fast enough. He underwent a surgery on November 2 but he is still critical and continues to be in partial coma. We’ve already paid ₹7 lakh and exhausted all insurance cover. I don’t know how much more we can afford,” he said.
